Week 1 – Blogs, blogging alliance and setting up your PLN

Well here I am finally after a few challenges setting up my blog! (better late than never?)

1. Reading 6 steps to Effective self learning helped build my self esteem because I do follow these steps. I then followed the link to the article Why Great People Never stop Learning. I loved this article but was astounded by the claim that “42% of all college graduates never read another book again. Ever.”

After discussing this with a colleague today, we agreed that nowdays people may do more reading on a computer or digital device than from a paper printed book. I still love going to bed with an interesting book though!

I liked the list of ways to make sure you don’t break the habit of learning.

Teach like a champion

I am an avid reader and got very excited today when the book I ordered online arrived: “Teach Like a Champion“, by Doug Lemov, (2010). Even though I have taught now for 30 years, there is still plenty to learn by Observing other teachers teach.

Please consider where you are at currently in terms of your skills and experience with Web 2.0 tools. Are you just getting around to using them, or are you an avid user? Write a blog post explaining this and share the ways you may have used some tools previously. Please provide any relevant links.

I love ICT and endeavour to use Web 2.0 tools where I can see them improving my teaching and the students learning. Twelve months ago I set up a blog aimed at Maths teachers. It is called Webmaths and has now had over 30,000 hits. I will let you visit and form your own opinions, rather than rave on about it here.

My current blog, which I am quite excited about, is a Maths blog I use with my two year nine classes. Here I set tasks for my students to do. This is particularly beneficial to students like Bec, who can rarely get to school because of a medical condition. It is called y9msc. Browse over and let me know what you think. Any suggestions are welcome.

You have excellent skills, so I hope there’s enough here to keep you challenged! Isn’t great when you hear or read about something and you think, ‘yes, I do that.’ It really makes you feel great that you are on the right track.
